๐ Kathen Furmeister Notes
02 · KATHEN FURMEISTER — WOUND 02
High school. Wound 02 — Grief turned into armor. Left after graduation to become something. His path was visible to him before anyone else could see it. A Meister — a person defined by a specific competence or calling that eventually pulled him away from everything, including Ron. He has been competent at everything since. Exposed about nothing. The armor isn't coldness. It's proof that meaning something once was enough to make sure he'd never have to risk it again.
❖ Wound 02's Group Lead seat remains separately open (the character who 'lost a woman because he was too needy'). Kathen carries the same wound category with a different personal expression.
The Vow
Before he left, he gave away his Kahohu Plum — the one given only once, ever. The vow underneath it: you will never break apart from each other's cracks again. He broke it anyway — not out of betrayal. The calling that made him a Meister pulled him out the door before either of them understood what staying would cost.
"Ron still thinks I left because I outgrew him. I left because staying meant he'd eventually ask me something I already knew I couldn't survive answering honestly."
"I already meant it once. I don't get to mean it again."
"You don't give the whole fruit twice. That's not a rule someone wrote down. That's just what happens to the rest of you once you've already done it."
"I didn't break a promise. I kept it exactly once, completely, and then I left before it could become a habit I'd have to keep failing at."
"I saw the door before anyone else in the room knew it existed. I walked through it because staying would have meant admitting I didn't know how."
"People call it discipline. It's just the version of hiding that gets you promoted."
"Becoming something was never the hard part. The hard part was knowing exactly what I was leaving behind while I did it."
"Some promises you can apologize for. Mine doesn't take an apology. It just stays broken, correctly, forever."
"The first time it breaks you, it's heartbreaking. The second time, it's an old habit. The third time would just be an act of foolishness."
"Maybe the fruit doesn't care how many times you give it. Maybe that's a rule I made up so I'd never have to find out."
"Sometimes I think about handing someone a piece of Li Hing Kaho instead — something smaller, coated, seen anew. It's never the same. It's just the only version of it I still let myself do."
The Alley Scene
Kathen goes into an alley and finds Li Hing Kaho on the ground, landed near the sprouted beginnings of a Kahohu plum tree growing in the city. He investigates, remembering Ron's words about the appearance of the fruit. This is before he meets Character A — someone important, to whom he will give an object that turns the tide of battle.
The Battle — Breaking the Rule
Confirmed direction: Kathen gives his second-ever Kahohu Plum to Character A, mid-battle, breaking his own law. Confirmed treatment: this is not a reflex — it is written as a firm decision, a revelation, an acceptance, a philosophy-changing moment that is one of the major beats of his arc.
The Revelation
He has always believed the rule was about the fruit — that meaning it once uses up the capacity to mean it again. The revelation is that he misread what the first vow actually proved. He survived meaning something completely, lost it anyway, and came out the other side still capable of feeling it that much. That isn't a flaw. It's evidence of the opposite of what he'd been telling himself.
He always thought the rule was about the fruit. It was never about the fruit. It was about whether he trusted himself to survive feeling that much again. He already had the proof. He'd just been calling it caution instead of evidence.
The New Governing Line
"I thought meaning it once was the only chance I'd get. I was wrong. It was the lesson. Not the limit."
❖ This line sits directly opposite 'I already meant it once. I don't get to mean it again' — the rule he lived by, and the sentence that replaces it.
✦ Open: Character A's full identity. Not yet decided — deliberately set aside for a future session.
✦ Open: Who did Kathen give the original Kahohu Plum to? That person's identity will announce itself when the right character arrives in the writing.
✦ Open: The full prose of the battle scene itself.
